O.N.E. Community

Gregorio. Kit. Rolando. Harry. Liz. Callie. Rosa. When news came that their mobile home park was up for sale, seven caring members of the Gunnison Valley community stepped up to represent their 300+ friends and neighbors at Country Meadows as a new Board of Directors.

These seven have worked with their neighbors, local leaders and community advocates to create the Organización de Nuevas Esperanzas (O.N.E.) or Organization of New Hope. Their newly-formed nonprofit gives the Country Meadows residents a collective voice. Attending some of their Board meetings has truly been an honor…and humbling. Together they work through the business at hand with interpretation – a room full of people contributing in both English and Spanish.

O.N.E.’s efforts to purchase the property where their homes sit is still under way, and they are prepared for a variety of outcomes.

An offer for purchase is currently on the table by an unknown buyer. If it goes through, the hope is that the new owner will continue to run the park that contains over 50 mobile homes. If the new owner has other plans, however, our collective Gunnison Valley community may see these 300+ neighbors displaced without a place to call home. While most of them own their trailers, they rent the land underneath, and many of the trailers are too old to be moved.

If the current offer falls through, O.N.E. is organized to continue pursuing avenues to purchase the land, a model known as resident owned community (ROC). ROCs are becoming popular around the country as other mobile home parks face the same plight. They empower residents to truly take ownership of their homes by having the security of also owning the land underneath.

No matter the outcome, O.N.E. endeavors to create a model for residents of mobile home parks throughout the Gunnison area. They’re organized. They’re dedicated to learning the ins and outs of being a nonprofit. They’re motivated to continue working with County officials, pro bono attorneys, and community advocates to shed light on the importance of their neighborhood. And they do this not only for themselves but for our local workforce and for the vibrancy of our entire community. O.N.E. is truly a model for building a resilient community, and we can all learn from them how to be good neighbors.

Gregorio. Kit. Rolando. Harry. Liz. Callie. Rosa.
