Stories from 2024 Community Grants Recipients

Every year, Community Grants recipients submit reports that demonstrate the profound impact of donor investments in the Gunnison Valley. These reports provide valuable insights into how organizations are serving our community and the ways they collaborate to increase their reach. Among the most inspiring elements of these reports are the individual stories that showcase transformational moments in people’s lives. Today, we share three stories from 2024 Community Grants recipients that highlight the incredible impact these organizations are having on our valley’s youth.

Crested Butte Nordic: Where Dreams Take Flight on Home Trails

CB Nordic has long been a cornerstone of youth development in Crested Butte, fostering not just athletic excellence but also community spirit and resilience. This year, their commitment to affordable youth programming culminated in a moment that perfectly captured the essence of what makes this organization special. Here’s their story:

This year we held a Junior National Qualifier in mid-February. Teams from all over the Rocky Mountain region convene in CB with skiers from second grade up through high school to pour their hearts out on our beautiful high-altitude trails. The volunteers come out of the woodwork for a JNQ. Unlike the circus of the Alley Loop or Grand Traverse, a JNQ brings out the quiet and diehard nordic locals and parents of former CB Nordic racers who have long since grown up and moved on.

As a club Nordic team, our competitive division is small. Finn Veit, a Crested Butte senior, was one of six comp team racers this year. He’s been a Nordic racer since elementary school and embodies the CB Nordic spirit of community, tenacity, and teamwork. After a freezing day of classic racing in an all-out blizzard on Saturday (the Cupid Crusher – one of only three notable snowstorms this season), Finn toed the line for the skate 5k on Sunday on a beautiful bluebird day ready to leave it all out on the trails. When he crossed the finish line of the skate 5k in first place, the entire CB Nordic system of support was there to witness it – his first win in the last JNQ of his high school career on home turf. The years of hard work and dedication were evident. And we, as CB Nordic staff, were incredibly proud of the commitment we’ve made to affordable youth programming.

Congrats to Finn and the entire CB Nordic family on another beautiful season.

Gunnison Valley Mentors: Friendships That Span Generations

Over 300 mentoring partnerships received services through Gunnison Valley Mentors in 2024, each representing a unique story of connection and growth. Among these partnerships, the relationship between mentor Rita Merrigan and her mentee Aida stands out as a testament to the transformative power of long-term mentorship. Rita shared a little about their experience in her own words:

Two women standing together. The one on the left has long, curly black hair and is wearing all black and smiling. The one on the right has short silver hair and a big smile. She's wearing a pink jacket, white pants, and pink shoes.

I began mentoring Aida in 2009, when she was nine. At first, we were shy and didn’t know exactly what to expect. It didn’t take long to adventure out and explore our beautiful Valley. We went on hikes, and Aida especially loved the wildflowers. We tried fishing which wasn’t exactly successful. We enjoyed the Recreation Center and the Ice Rink. We went out early to watch huge balloons rising on the 4th of July. I got to know her family, and we shared many birthdays and holidays together. Our friendship grew.

In 3rd grade, Aida was challenged to read 300 books with the Pig-Out-On-Books program. We read together almost every day. Not only did Aida meet the challenge, but she won first place! Years passed, our Mentorship continued, her family became like part of mine, and in 2015 we were named the Partnership of the Year, a huge honor. We talked about dreams and encouraged each other to reach for the stars. We even worked summers together on the Rockin’ Reading Route. Our mentorship continued through Aida’s graduation from GHS in 2020 and we are still good friends after 16 years. On March 27, 2025, it was an honor to celebrate a momentous occasion as she was sworn in as a new American citizen, a proud moment for me.

Congratulations Aida and thank you to Rita and all of the mentors who volunteer their time to connect with and support local youth.

West Elk Hockey Association: Opening Doors Through Skating

West Elk Hockey Association’s (WEHA) commitment to making hockey accessible to all valley youth reached new heights in 2024 with the expansion of their successful Skate for PE Program. Building on their established program in Crested Butte, WEHA extended the initiative to include all first-grade classes in Gunnison. We heard about the impact of the program from Coach Bill:

WEHA expanded the very successful Skate for PE Program to include the Gunnison 1st Grade Classes along with the CB 1st Grade Classes this past season. WEHA provided all gear and coaching to seven 1st Grade Classes and 155 five, six, and seven year olds. These students got to skate at our local rinks for 3 sessions during February and March of 2025. This program breaks down any financial restraints and enables all FIrst Graders with the opportunity to try skating. Many of these children had never skated before or had the opportunity to try ice skating previously. This program allows them to try it and experience something that allows them to step out of their comfort zone and experience the joy of trying something new. After coaching in Gunnison one evening, I stopped to get dinner and ran into Alun and his family at the restaurant. Alun is a 1st Grader in Gunnison who skated for the first time in this program. Alun introduced Coach Bill to his family and told his younger siblings how much fun Skate for PE was and that they would get to do it when they were in 1st Grade. Alun’s excitement for skating and his desire to skate again were evident throughout this chance meeting and reinforced why we do it and how much coaching influences the youth in the valley!

Three cheers for Coach Bill and the whole team at WEHA.

Building Tomorrow's Community Today

These three stories illustrate the profound impact that Community Grants have on developing strong, confident, and connected young people in the Gunnison Valley. From Finn’s triumph on the Nordic trails to Aida’s journey from childhood mentorship to American citizenship, and Alun’s newfound love for skating, these organizations are creating opportunities that shape our community’s future.

Through your generous support of the Community Foundation of the Gunnison Valley, you are investing in programs that not only serve immediate needs but also build the foundation for a thriving, resilient community for generations to come. These young people, and the hundreds of others served by grantee organizations, are tomorrow’s leaders, volunteers, and community builders.

Simplified Summary

In 2024, the Community Foundation of the Gunnison Valley gave money to local groups to help young people in our area. Here are three great stories about how this money made a difference. First, CB Nordic helps kids learn to ski race. This year, a high school senior named Finn won his first big race right here in Crested Butte after years of hard work. Second, Gunnison Valley Mentors pairs up kids with adult friends called mentors. Rita has been Aida’s mentor for 16 years, helping her with reading and supporting her through growing up. They’re still friends today, and Rita got to watch Aida become an American citizen. Third, West Elk Hockey Association teaches first graders how to ice skate for free, giving all kids gear and lessons. A boy named Alun loved it so much that he told his whole family how fun skating was. These programs help kids try new things, make friends, and build confidence that will help them their whole lives.

How to be a Catalyst

Sometimes a gift is more than a one-time donation. Sometimes it’s a catalyst that sets off a chain reaction. Because CFGV offers unique tools for giving, like a variety of charitable giving funds, the chain reaction can often go further than we, or even the orginal donors, anticipate.
