Stephanie grew up in Battle Creek, Michigan and graduated from Smith College and Harvard Law School. She moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where she practiced law until she was appointed in 1979 to the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. She became semi-retired when she took senior status in 2005, but she still maintains an active caseload on the court, which sits in Denver.
Stephanie’s primary residence remains in Tulsa, but she and her family have enjoyed ski vacations in Crested Butte since 1980. She and her husband Tom purchased their first home on the mountain 1992, and they now spend most of their summers in Crested Butte. Over the years, Stephanie has been active in Oklahoma in a number of legal-related civic and human rights activities. She is currently a member of the Crested Butte Music Festival Board.
