JOB DESCRIPTION:

Scope of Work
The Director of Philanthropy’s primary responsibilities include support, guidance and leadership for all resource development and donor services activities, as well as assistance to the Executive Director in various initiatives of the Community Foundation of the Gunnison Valley (CFGV).

Accountability
The Director of Philanthropy is accountable to the Executive Director.

Authority
The Director of Philanthropy is authorized to execute, or cause to be executed, plans and activities approved by the Executive Director in the areas of resource development, donor database and related records, donor relations and services, fund development, and other various initiatives as outlined in the CFGV Strategic Plan or otherwise approved by the Board of Directors.

Responsibilities
The Director of Philanthropy is responsible for:

  • Creating, implementing and tracking progress on an annual development plan
  • Creating, implementing and tracking progress on an annual donor services plan
  • Identifying, researching and tracking prospective donors
  • Utilizing CRM software to develop and execute moves management strategy for donors and prospects
  • Managing relationships with donors, including correspondence, scheduling meetings, making asks when appropriate, etc.
  • Managing relationships with fund holders, including correspondence, scheduling meetings, providing information for and facilitating grantmaking, etc.
  • Engaging with potential fund holders and working with them to obtain necessary information to open a fund
  • Liaising with Development and Events Committees and engaging them to help the organization achieve its fundraising and events goals
  • Planning and coordinating donor stewardship and cultivation events
  • Writing, designing and producing/coordinating direct mail and other solicitations
  • Entering donations into accounting software
  • Writing and producing donor thank you letters in a timely manner and tracking their progress in CRM software
  • Other duties as assigned

Working with CFGV staff, the Director of Philanthropy will assist with:

  • Developing the annual budget
  • Participating in annual Community Grants cycle and Scholarship process
  • Coordinating and staffing special events
  • Providing development-related advice and support to local nonprofits and their staff
  • Writing, submitting and tracking grant proposals and reporting requirements
  • Supporting community initiatives and special projects/programs
  • Representing CFGV at various events and functions around the community
  • Providing support for Executive Director, Director of Operations, Community Impact staff, and Communications Contractor as needed

Work Requirements
The Director of Philanthropy can expect:

  • Approximately 40-hour work week (with flex and comp time available)
  • Occasional after-hours events
  • Occasional local and overnight travel
  • Occasional out of state travel
  • Sitting or standing for long periods of time
  • Computer work and significant screen time
  • Occasional lifting of less than 25 lbs.

Skills and Qualifications
The Director of Philanthropy should demonstrate:

  • At least 5 years of experience in nonprofit Development or Donor Relations
  • Comprehension of moves management systems and philosophy
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365, Google Suite, Zoom
  • Familiarity with MailChimp or similar marketing platforms
  • Affinity for learning new software, databases, programs, etc.
  • Outstanding organizational skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Ability to be a self-starter with understanding of when to take initiative
  • Positive attitude and ability to be a team player
  • Ability to communicate effectively with various audiences as appropriate
  • Desire to foster equity and inclusion in the organization and broader community

Preferred skills and knowledge include:

  • Aptitude for public speaking
  • Knowledge of the Gunnison Valley community
  • Experience with or knowledge of community foundations or grantmaking foundations
  • Experience with or knowledge of CommunitySuite or other Foundant Technologies solutions

Salary and Benefits
Beginning salary ranges from $55,000 to $75,000, depending on experience. COLA and merit-based increases are available annually. Full-time employees are eligible for health insurance (with 100% of employee premium covered) and paid time off, including vacation and sick leave, ten holidays, and three personal days. CFGV provides a flexible work environment.

Timeline
Position will be open until filled. First round of interviews will likely begin in mid-September, and subsequent ongoing interviews will take place on a rolling basis in October, if necessary.
